My Goals in Paying it Back to the Community
While living in Grand Cayman, one trait I have seen and love about this community is the constant push to always pay-it back to the community with that CaymanKind charisma. This is an incredible trait to continue to uplift each other as well as educate those who are interested. Because of this, I have come up with some plans that I would love to pay back to the community that has brought me in, making Grand Cayman feel like home!
In order to pay back to the community, I have brainstormed a few ideas that I think could be beneficial to the community. While completing Foundations of Nursing, we were introduced to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that has been implemented by all United Nations members. This plan basically formulated 17 Sustainable Development Goals with the intention that all contributing members should push towards achieving these goals, creating a healthier, more stable environment. As a healthcare student or professional, we gain knowledge in quite a few of these goals, and I would love to help provide services to educate the community. As a way to pay back to the community I would love to create public meetings, free of charge, where anyone who is interested can come to the meeting and learn about a wide variety of topics. Just as a brainstorm, these topics could include the following:
· Women’s Health (Gender Equality)
· Explaining how to deal with Viruses (Good Health & Well Being)
· Child Nutritional Values (Good Health & Well Being)
· Hurricane Hygiene (Quality Education)
· Nutrition Towards a Healthier Heart (Good Health & Well Being)
· Mental Health Awareness (Good Health & Well Being)
· How to Fight Bad Cholesterol (Good Health & Well Being)
· Fish Month: Ciguatera- What is it? (Quality Education)
· Adolescence & Mental Health: How to Cope as a Parent? (Good Health & Well Being)
· Recycling within Daily Lifestyles (Responsible Consumption and Production)
· And many, many more!
The goal of these meetings is to create a safe, educational atmosphere for any locals within the community who are interested in learning more as well as meeting other locals who might be dealing with similar situations, creating a stronger feeling of community. Another goal for these meetings is to create a place for locals to feel comfortable to seek advice. It is critical for this type of environment to exist because there could be locals who are dealing with a private crises at home, seeking out help. If these meetings are successful, they will not only educate, but also provide information (like educational pamphlets or contacts) of the different social services to give help to those in need.
